My current 6 year old PC appears to have bit the dust and it might be time to upgrade. As someone who takes pride in having the slowest (cheapest) thing that will do the job I’m seriously considering getting a mac mini. The main reason being that they are completely silent (apart from the DVD player which apparently is quite noisy..). The main downside for me is that as a DVD player apparently they aren’t much chop anyway. As a media hub it’s no great gain either as I’ve already got XBMC going sweetly. But as a file and web server it would be pretty sweet. And if I could get my plutohome going on it as well that could be a clincher…

$1200 is a lot for a fileserver though — maybe look at one of those “network ready” hard disks? just hook it up to the router and there you go.
